Flipping

Flipping– at least in the context of side hustles– is the art of finding free (or cheap) items, and reselling them at a profit.

I’ll be the first to admit that selling stuff online can be a hassle. Unless you use a local platform (like Facebook Marketplace or OfferUp), there’s the matter of packing and shipping an item, and oftentimes, whatever you’re selling can take weeks or months to offload.

That said, if you have extra space– and a little extra energy and patience– you can make a pretty penny selling your stuff online.

I’m not going to pretend I’ve sold on every platform, but I’m fairly experienced with eBay and OfferUp, and have either dabbled with or done research into other platforms. What I’ve found is there’s truly a market for anything and everything!

Where to Find Stuff to Sell

If you’re low on resources– or even just a minimalist– you may be asking, “What do I have to sell?” I’m not advocating for selling your only couch or your only TV or any the few “luxuries” you may have. You deserve good things too, and shouldn’t feel the need to get rid of the few things you use or enjoy.

Fortunately, you don’t really need to spend much, if any, money to acquire things to resell (or keep for yourself). All you have to do is peruse Craigslist, OfferUp, Facebook Marketplace, Nextdoor, and Freecycle, among countless other sites, to find free treasure.

To boot, you don’t even need to resell your new goodies online— you can often trade them in at brick-and-mortar!

Think GameStop, where you can trade in video games and related items, or any of the countless secondhand apparel stores in any major city. You probably won’t get as much as if you’d sold them yourself— but if you’re getting the stuff for free, who cares?
